Fuller bust and plus size

Bras for big busts: a UK DD+ guide

UK fuller-bust brands make bras into H, J and K cups with small bands, so a big bust does not have to mean a big band. Here is how to find the right size and style.

What to search for on Amazon UK

Add your UK size to the search on Amazon (for example “34G”). Not sure of it? Use our bra size calculator first.

  1. 1

    Seamed full-cup bra (DD+)

Three-part cups with a side support panel hold fuller breasts forward and give the most coverage.

  2. 2

    Fuller-bust balconette

Lift from underneath and a rounded shape, made in deep cups with small bands.

  3. 3

    Fuller-bust moulded T-shirt bra

Smooth, deep moulded cups for fitted tops, in proper DD+ sizes.

  4. 4

    Minimiser bra

Reduces projection so shirts and knitwear sit more smoothly.

The right bra for a big bust has a firm band that matches your underbust and cups deep enough to hold all of your breast tissue. UK fuller-bust brands make bras in DD to K cups and beyond, with bands from 28 upwards, so there is almost always a true fit.

Why so many people with big busts wear the wrong size

The most common mistake is a band that is too big with a cup that is too small, such as wearing 38DD when a 34G fits. The loose band rides up, the straps take the weight and dig in, and the small cups push tissue out. Our bra size calculator uses the UK no-add method, so it does not inflate the band.

Features that give real support

  • A firm band, usually with three or more hooks.
  • Seamed cups, often three-part, which shape and lift better than a single moulded layer at larger sizes.
  • Side support panels inside the cup that keep tissue facing forward.
  • Wider, cushioned straps that spread the weight.
  • Wires that reach your underarm, enclosing all the tissue at the sides.

Which styles suit a fuller bust?

Most styles do, if made for fuller cups. A balconette gives lift and a rounded shape. A full cup gives the most coverage. A plunge suits low necklines. A minimiser reduces projection under shirts. For exercise, see our guide to sports bras for big busts.

How to check the fit

  1. The band is level and firm on the loosest hook.
  2. The centre front lies flat on your breastbone.
  3. The wires sit behind your breast tissue at the sides.
  4. No spill at the top or sides, and no gaping.

The bra fitting guide explains each step, and the fit checker works through problems.

UK brands for big busts

Panache, Freya, Curvy Kate, Fantasie and Elomi all specialise in fuller-bust sizes, and Bravissimo sells fuller-bust bras through its own shops. Our brand size guides list each brand’s published size range and how it labels cups.

Questions people ask

What counts as a big bust in UK sizes?
Retailers usually call DD and above “fuller bust” or DD+. UK cups go DD, E, F, FF, G, GG, H, HH, J, JJ, K, KK, L. See our UK bra size chart.
Why do my bras dig in at the shoulders?
Usually the band is too loose, so the straps carry the weight. A firmer band takes most of the load off your shoulders. Try a smaller band with a bigger cup: your sister size.
Are US and UK cup sizes the same above D?
No. A US DDD is roughly a UK E, and US letters drift further from UK ones above that. Use our bra size converter.
Do I need a bigger band because I have a big bust?
Not usually. Band size comes from your underbust measurement. Many people with large cups have small bands, such as 30 or 32.
