Front fastening bras: easy on, easy off

A bra that opens at the front is easier to put on if reaching behind you is difficult, because of arthritis, a shoulder injury, surgery or simply preference.

A row of hooks at the centre front is the most adjustable front closure and stays flat under clothes.

  2. 2

    Front fastening non-wired bra

Wire-free comfort with a front opening, popular after surgery and for everyday ease.

  3. 3

    Front fastening posture bra

A higher, firmer back with crossed or wide straps for extra support across the shoulders.

  4. 4

A zip front makes a firm sports bra much easier to get on and off.

A front fastening bra opens and closes at the centre front instead of the back. It is easier to put on and take off if reaching behind you is difficult, and many styles are as supportive as a back-fastening bra.

Who are front fastening bras for?

  • People with arthritis, limited shoulder movement or reduced grip.
  • Anyone recovering from surgery; see our guide to post-surgery bras.
  • Older shoppers and carers helping someone dress.
  • Anyone who wants a racerback style, as many front-fastening bras have a smooth back.

Hooks, clasp or zip?

  • Hook-and-eye panels have two or three adjustable positions, so you can loosen or tighten the band like a standard bra.
  • Single clasps, often plastic, are neat and flat but cannot be adjusted. They suit lighter cup sizes.
  • Zips are quick, and common on sports and post-surgery bras.
  • Velcro-style closures are the easiest for limited grip.

How to get the size right

Front closures sit at the centre, so the band has to fit well from the start. Find your UK size with our bra size calculator, then check:

  1. The band is level and snug. If it has only one setting, choose by your band.
  2. The front closure lies flat against your breastbone without pulling.
  3. The cups hold your breasts with no spill or gaping.
  4. Straps adjust easily; front-adjusting straps are a bonus if reaching up is hard.

The bra fitting guide explains each check in detail.

Brands to search for

Royce and Anita both make front fastening bras, including wire-free styles in fuller cup sizes. For other wire-free options, see non-wired bras with good support.

Questions people ask

Are front fastening bras supportive?
They can be. Choose one sold in band and cup sizes with a firm band; hook-and-eye panels give the most adjustable fit. Single plastic clasps suit lighter cup sizes.
Who should wear a front fastening bra?
Anyone who finds a back fastening hard to reach, such as people with arthritis or limited shoulder movement, after surgery, or in later life. Many people simply prefer them.
Is a front fastening bra the same size as my normal bra?
Usually, yes. Because many front closures cannot be loosened, check the band fits snugly on the first try. Our bra size calculator gives a starting size.
