Lingerie sets that fit as well as they look

A matching bra and knickers set looks pulled together, but the bra still needs to fit your UK size. Here is how to choose a set that feels as good as it looks.

A lingerie set is a bra and knickers designed to match. The best sets are sold as separates, so you can buy the bra in your UK band and cup size and the knickers in your usual size. Sets sold only as S, M or L are a gamble for anyone outside an average cup.

Sized separately or as a set?

  • Sold as separates: the bra comes in sizes such as 34DD and the knickers in 8 to 22. This is how most UK lingerie brands sell matching ranges, and it fits best.
  • Sold as one size label: S, M, L or 8, 10, 12 covers both pieces. Fine for bralette sets and smaller cups, but the cup often will not match a fuller bust.

Choose the bra style first

The bra decides comfort, so choose its shape for your outfit and body:

  • Balconette for lift and a pretty, straight neckline.
  • Plunge for V-necks and a closer shape.
  • Lace for detail, lined or unlined.
  • Bralette for comfort and lighter support.

Then pick knickers in the same fabric: briefs, high-waist, thong or short.

Fabric and comfort

Stretch lace and microfibre move with you; rigid lace looks crisp but needs a precise cup fit. Check that the knickers have a cotton gusset, and that lace edges lie flat rather than cutting in.

Check the fit when it arrives

Try the bra on the loosest hooks and check the band, cups, wires and straps with our bra fitting guide. Keep the tags on until you are sure, and return pieces separately if only one fits.

Care

Wash the pieces together in a mesh bag on a cool, gentle cycle so the colours stay matched, and air dry. Our guide on how to wash bras has the full routine.

Questions people ask

How do I choose the size of a lingerie set?
Choose the bra by UK band and cup size and the knickers by your usual knicker or dress size. If a set only comes in S, M, L, check the maker’s chart for band and cup equivalents.
Can I buy a set in different sizes?
Many lingerie brands sell matching pieces separately, which is the best way to get both a well-fitting bra and comfortable knickers.
What is a bra and knicker set called?
Lingerie set, matching set, bra set or co-ord. A set with a suspender belt is often called a three-piece set.
