Bra fitting: what to expect

A bra fitting is a short, private appointment where a fitter checks your band, cups and straps and brings you sizes to try. Here is what happens, and how to prepare.

By Jenisha Jonchhe How we research Updated

A bra fitting is a free, ten-to-twenty-minute appointment in a lingerie shop or department store. A trained fitter looks at how your current bra sits, suggests a starting size, then brings several styles for you to try until the band is firm and level and the cups hold all your breast tissue.

What happens at a fitting

  1. A quick chat. The fitter asks what you wear the bra for and what bothers you about your current one.
  2. A look at your current bra. Many fitters start by checking the band, wires and straps on what you are wearing.
  3. Measuring, or not. Some fitters use a tape; others, such as Bravissimo’s, judge by eye and by trying bras on.
  4. Trying on. You try several sizes and shapes. The fitter adjusts straps and checks the fit from the side and back.

The size you leave with is a starting point. Brands and styles fit differently, so expect to try a sister size in some ranges.

How to prepare

  • Wear a thin, fitted top so you can see how each bra looks under clothes.
  • Bring the bra you wear most, even if it is the one that annoys you.
  • Know what you need: everyday, sport, a strapless for an event, or nursing.

What a good fitter checks

  • The band sits level around your back and you can fit only two fingers underneath.
  • The centre front lies flat against your breastbone.
  • The cup edge is smooth, with no spill or gaping.
  • Straps do not dig in, because the band is doing the lifting.

Most UK lingerie shops and department stores offer fittings free of charge. Some ask you to book, so check the shop’s website first.

Usually you stay in your own bra for the first look, then try new bras on in a private changing room. You can ask the fitter to wait outside.
How often should I get fitted?
Every six to twelve months, or sooner after weight change, pregnancy, breastfeeding or a new exercise routine.
